Wisconsin Quilt Museum
The Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts is located on a designated historic farmstead site approximately one mile east of historic downtown Cedarburg. The former Museum operated from a farmhouse on this homestead. Due to a growing collection and expanded operational needs, the Museum was greatly in need of additional space. It was the Museum’s desire to remain on the site by constructing an addition and converting an existing barn into gallery and classroom space. The project has also been developed to accommodate special event functions, requiring the need for a catering kitchen, as well as indoor and outdoor gathering spaces. A future phase involves reconstructing an additional salvaged barn from a separate location. The challenge of this adaptive re-use project was not only the sensitive integration of the reconstructed barn and new structure within the historic context of the farmstead, but also the accommodation of varied programmatic goals, while providing for full accessibility on this steep rustic site.
